About Unorthodox Cricket

Playing cricket can be hard enough at the best of times, let alone when the price of kit these days cost about the same as a small mortgage.  We all want the best value for what we do out on the pitch, but it’s pretty hard to justify throwing, in some cases, over $1,000 for a top end stick.

That’s where we come in. The team here at Unorthodox, having gone through our fair share of bats, thought there must be a better way. We embarked on a mission to find where the best bats come from, how they are made, and why they now cost as much as they do. 100’s of emails, phone calls, and trips later we found a few hearty old souls who had been making bats for years (back in the days of the old half inch Duncan Fernley), and are now hand crafting much lighter, bigger, and better bats made for today’s game (basically, the same sort you see Baz McCullum slaying round the MCG in the Big Bash). These guys where happy to get on board, they love making bats, and we love being able to offer them to you.

The answer to the question of why bats are so expensive these days was much easier to find. it’s pretty simple really, slapping a sticker of an Australian bird, a big tick, or a few letters, practically doubles the price of these bits of willow that are pumped out of factories in India

So basically what we are offering here at Unorthodox are hand crafted, premier English willow bats with all the bells and whistles, at a fraction of the costs. You also have the opportunity to custom design your own blade, rather than settle for the factory finish you get from the big brands. So, if you rate yourself as a bit of a finesse player like Steady the Ship Williamson, love giving it the long handle like Munro, or even want one of those half-length mongoose bats that some of those weirdos used to play with, we can sort you out.

Happy hunting out there, and don’t forget to show the guy who’s bat you always borrowed your shiny new blade, we are sure he’ll be stoked.
